Pancake Day

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the day before the first day of Lent. On this day, the food that couldn’t be eaten during the religious fasting would be eaten. These foods included eggs and milk which are two of the three ingredients used to make pancakes. And so became the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.

Now, the religious meanings of the day aren’t commonly practised amongst children and so, the day is just an excuse to eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

My mother’s British pancakes recipe:

100 grams – plain flour
285 ml – milk
2 eggs
Pinch of salt

  • Whisk all the ingredients together and leave to stand for 30 minutes or more.
  • Heat a frying pan and then add a drop of oil.
  • Add the mixture to thinly cover the pan.
  • Then, leave it for about 2 minutes or until the pancake mixture has ‘bubbled up’. Loosen the pancake with a spatula and then flip over.

Serve and enjoy with your favoruite toppings!

Enjoy flipping!

What are your favourite pancake toppings?

Are you a sweet (jam, fruit, sugar, lemon, chocolate spread) or a savoury (eggs, bacon, cheese, mushroom) kinda person?
